retrieving server info

for some reason whenever i try to join a server zombie panic locks up at retrieving server info. i can make my own servers and it wont lock up and cs source and hl dm work fine can somebody please help me?

i have a 256 mb nvidia video card
1.8 gb pentium 4
1gig ddr ram

ok, first things first. What series and model is your card? (ex. nVidia 6600, nVidia 8800gtx, etc.)

And do you have SourceSDK Base and SourceSDK installed? These can be found in the 'Tools' tab in Steam. If not, install them.

Be patient, I have a 8800GTS and it still takes aaaaaaaaaaaaaages on retrieving server info (seems to happen in all Source Mods) but it still will load, just takes it's time... Weird thing is, if there is like a tiny download, I get that, it takes like 5 seconds to download, it skips the retrieving server info part and I connect to the server really quickly... What's up with that?

i have a geforce fx5500 i believe. ill take your advice and see if it works.
