Hi! I downloaded the ZP:S beta a few days ago and absolutely love the gameplay. I figured that since I have nothing to do until uni starts again, and since i'm strapped for cash and have nowhere to go, that i'd try my hand at making a map. This is my first attempt at a proper map as per-se. I've created a few rooms and the like in the past but not anything on this scale.

Anyway introduction out of the way it's a school map which is based on.... my old school :). This is very much a work in progress but i'd like some advice.

I've placed "opening soon" boards on ropes, the boards can be moved but not broken which should make for some tense standoffs as it's hard to see any zombies coming to the shop if you're hiding in it.

Thanks for any constructive criticism. I also know that my style of working is strange, but i prefer to get stuff done room by room - even though I have a plan of what's to come :blink:.

EDIT: Image shack seems to be removing my images, maybe bandwidth violation or something. I'll re-upload in a bit.

Hmmm I think school's lights should be hanging one or build into ceiling...
These on walls looks like in some kind of museum or some hotel... .

Yeah they had uplighting in the halls in my school, and flourecscents everywhere else except the toilets. I'm going to work on the geometry of the map a little more and add some more areas today. I would really appreciate some feedback on what i have so far.

If you would post Your school's pictures, then we could comment about how good it has been done, but right now... Hmmm I can't, due I don't know how your real school looks like.

I can only say that, that looks like a hotel/museum for me... ;) (Because these lamps on walls...).

Okay, but if you leave the school part out, and take it just as a map of it's own how does it stand up design wise?

I've added a stairwell which is nearly finished, just needs a little optimisation and fine tuning to be what i want it to be. I've also re-uploaded the old images that went missing onto Photobucket.

I'll put 10 Zombie spawns in and 10 Survivor spawns. Also the wooden stairs are only a placeholder right now until i find a more suitable material.

Good job! keep it up. I wanna see more. =)

Only thing is that the images are at an odd angle which sort of makes it hart to get the right idea of how the rooms are connected... and such.

How do you mean? I know I need the starting area, but I also need the spawns in the map. If you mean size-wise then i've planned it from the start to be a 20 person map.

So far as I know some people will select zombie spawn and most of them humans...
As far as I noticed, Pushing F2 or enterning Zombies spawn in lobby, doesn't make you zombie on 100% ! So I think 3 people will be zombies, rest (17) will be humans, wich means most of them (if not all) will be blocked one inside each other !
Just make 20-32 spawns for humans and 20-32 spawns for zombies.

He got similar criticism, but don't quit. It's gonna be open n all cus schools have a lot of people moving through them.

Don't listen to the people trying to tell you how to build your map. Do it how you want it, model it after your school. In fact, try and get it as close as possible to your school. I think it looks awesome already. (Maybe I'm not a good critic, but I do like it a lot. I like cheese's map a lot too. I'm not crazy about that mall one that's been floating around on some servers...but apparently those are still beta2s, with beta3 coming like tonight or something). Keep up the nice work IMO.

the mall map is fun for like 2/3 games... but yeah the original maps bore me like hell (except for town), so i can't blame them for hostin the maps.

Just to let you all know that progress on the map will be slowing a little as I moved back into my University house with my mates at the weekend. This is not to say that i will be stopping, just slowing a little.

I did a little work on the geometry earlier in the week actually. I should have the layout nearly finished soon. I'll post when I do.

Nice dude. Well, pm or email me with the map if you don't feel comfortable with a public release. I run custom maps on my server to give feedback about it and I DO talk to the map maker and let them know what's up. Hope to hear from ya personally.

Well after a long while I've finaly started work on my map again, however due to someone getting in there before me and releasing a "zps_school" I've had to rename my map to "zps_college". Anyway this is a work in progress and the areas completed so far haven't got anywhere near the amount of polish that the final thing will have.

I've tried to describe the screenshots so it's easier to understand where things are. I have accidentaly left the bridge screenshots off of this post though but will post them with the next update. I'm happy to say that the map runs smooth enough and is about 50% completed as far as geometry goes.

Any comments would be much appreciated.

Been working on a little geometry again today and added an underground tunnel to a yet to be created part of the map.

I fixed your cubemaps problem buddy.

From moving from zps_school to zps_college (I don't know how if you recompiled) but you have a bunch of cubemaps VTF's for zps_school and then VTF's for cubemap data for zps_college (so two sets in effect) in almost all your VMT's you were referencing the zps_school cubemaps? You were also using an invalid filter "patch" as well and trying to include other (original) VMT's and then trying to "replace" values in them using a replace block...?

I ended up deleting all the VTF's that were cubemap related, I then copy'd all the VMT data from the original include files you were referncing 1 by 1 which was very fuking tedious and pasted into your VMT's removing everything (the patch block completely, but adding any additional data you had, there wasn't much only like a waterlevel in one or two files I believe).

Replacing all the VMT's with the data from the original source files fixed the textures (everytime I saved the data into the BSP it corrupted everything so I ended up exporting all files, deleting everything and then importing once saving to get the end result.

All the cubemap data was deleted and I loaded up the map and it was all good except the cubemap was still screwed but that was normal because I hadn't run buildcubemaps

Ran buildcubemaps in both HDR and non HDR and everything is now working flawlessly...

Just thought I would let you know in case you ever go to pickup this project again... I saw you had deleted the file from your website but anyway that is how you can fix it...
