Yo peeps. So basically im just wondering what sort of maps the zp community would like see for source? Now bear in mind i have yet to complete a map but i have 1 nearing completion & would like some ideas for my next project. When i say nearing completion i certainly hope to have it finished by crimbo at the latest. Also please note that i am in no way offically invoolved with the development of zp.
Now im not making any promises to make maps as im not the quickest or that advanced at this & i also have my own ideas but would like 2 know what others would think would be good maps to see in zp:s. The ideas im toying with are the winchester pub from shaun of the dead which i have seen a post on here about this before. Or the other idea is some kind of island in a jungle type location as i think this would differ from alot of the other maps ive seen so far. Any suggestions or ideas are welcomed though. I look forward to hearin all your ideas....or not.

Well I for one would like a darker map, not black and not able to see but something like where the power is out inside, you can see but barely. You could even make it objective like turn some generator on, then find something to open the room to get keys or something for a car that is out back.

Now this is a very basic and not very well thought out Idea but I am in class, and
have very little time left, and all im saying is that I want a very well made objective map(not saying the things out there aren't.) that is semi dark, and not huge but large.

Your own personal past, that's the best place to look.

Both of my projects zp_oldtown and zp_port where based on the same place in my own past. Its a community built into the side of a hill overlooking the great lakes far north of Wisconsin. Including that factory. Which looked nothing like I have now, but close to it.

I know where is something like that from your own history that you could recreate into a level for ZP:S.

Or.

Bedlam (http://209.150.104.196/horror/bedlambound/bedlam/menu1.html) < You just know they're zombies here.

Ravenholm.

That cavern one sounds cool too, but maybe have lava, and fire, and people chained to walls and hainging from the roof.

I think mapping can onlybe done when the mapper is into the idea. Thus, it is your own path to chose. I know its hard to think up of maps but it is worthwhile at the end.

Somebody is already doing a cave type level.

I really like the res evil 2 idea but im just wondering if i would be able to do it justice though. If i can figure out how to make my own textures (which doesnt sound too difficult for the basics) then i might try this. Id like to see the mansion from res evil 1 again aswell but this has been done far too many times.

Mapping from my past or current surroundings wouldnt be too good. I guess i have some nice corners of my mind from the past but nothing i could remember too well now.

I really love egyptology too & i fancy makin the great pyramid of giza as a map although i dont think this would really fit with zp. Also lots of custom textures would be required again too.

Thanks for all the suggestions anyway its appreciated. Im leaning towards the res evil 2 idea at the moment as i think this would be better suited than just the winchester pub. The only problem being that ive not played it since about '98! Ive got a lotta love for the old res evils though so i would really enjoy doing this 1.

I wont be rushing into this anyway because currently when i get 1 thing finished on my map i find three more things to do!!!

My own personal past......That's it time to make a playground map! we can have slides, and swings, and and boundries that if you go by them the teacher sits you in time out.

That's right best map ever!

Ive started mapping this area...it makes me feel warm & fuzzy. Its hard working from the pictures though as theyre pretty blocky but it lets me add my own things to the shop interiors & stuff. Im downloading the game at the moment so i can get more refrences to work from. :D This is the sorta stuff u want from res 2 right? Its certainly the part i thought of.

In regards to Zom-B, I mean I like the level design of Resident Evil. But overall... it's not your work. It's a remake, I'd go for something original.

Maybe focusing on not recreating it exactly but getting some of it to look like the idea you wanted may help make the map more creative and allow you to add your own content.

11-15-2005, 01:36 AM
Yeah im going to get a bit more creative as i'll have to make it so you can get all the way round, i might include the police station there but im still not sure. Im also making the interiors of alot of shops & buildings that you obviously couldnt go into on the original.

Its shaping up quite well at the moment. Im just trying to get the basic area mapped 1st to get an idea of how it would play. Its gonna be alot of work for me this 1 though & it might take a while. I took 60 screen grabs from the game the other day!

The only problem ive run into is with vehicles. I would probably need cop cars, fire engines & a bus!!! Ive not looked into modelling yet but i might be able to modify an existing car to make it a cop car i think. I could leave out the fire engine & im thinkin the bus is gonna be a no go unless somebody wants to make 1 where you could go through it......i cant really see that happening though. So i'll proably do something different for that part.

Ive just found a great thread over on the modelling page @ interlopers. Theyve put up links to sites you can go to get models for download. My fellow mappers should check it out if theyre after a specific model for something. Ive managed to find a bus, not quite what i was lookin for but it should do the trick. :D

How about just make a city (SF for example) Except it's all infested with zombies and parts of the glass are broken and the signs are all hanging.

Have a map of a Hotel, with a street infront of it two stories high.

Spawn the humans by the house and the zombies far behind the humans... Give the humans some props to blockade doors.

My idea for a map, which I doubt could be properly implemented in ZP1, would be a ship in dark waters. Maybe a cruise liner, for show. I would like to see something be able to trigger the ship to sink, slowly, and possibly tilt a bit while it was doing it. Since zombies are impervious to drowning, this would be a pretty interesting level, in my opinion. Zombies popping up out of submerged corridors, etc. Perhaps a few rooms that humans would have to swim through, where zombies might be waiting in underwater ambush. *shrug* The zombie spawn point might be underwater, beneath the ship. Survivors starting in civilian quarters.

Since the Source enging supports vehicles, maybe we could even get some powered life boats to carry humans toward an escape point or something?

I would love to see a Night of the Living Dead inspired map.

Basically this...

A semi-large house with two stories, mostly boarded up with destroyable boards, first floor is somewhat vulnerable after the boards die. Two rifles in the corners and a few clips of Pistol Ammo near the boarded door. A bathroom with some pistol ammo. If possible, props to blockade.

Large table barricade on the second floor with a shotgun behind it. Windows too high for zombies to reach, but escapable through to humans, windows drop onto dumpsters. Human spawn is on the first floor.

Once outside, there is a small path diving the house and a graveyard, leading down to a broken bridge, cannot cross, this is a boundry, a shotgun and ammo lies near it.

Across from the house, there is a graveyard with a short fence around it, this is the zombie spawn. Two Rifles and some ammo for shotty and pistol.

In the middle of the path there are two broken down cars and a shotgun in between them, they make good barricades.

Behind the house there is a small storage shed with a magnum and ammo in it, a large pile of rubble is near the house, a good camp point. The house has a ladder on the side of it so you can climb onto the roof of it. If possible, props to blockade.

Thats my suggestion.

I liked this idea alot, really detailed. Are you a mapper? Otherwise you should contact one to help you with that map?

No, I found it hard to start with the Hammer Editor, I just have a lot of ideas.

Thanks for the feedback. Know any mappers I could ask?

I don't know who came up with the carnival idea, but it ownz lol

Carnival - required: ferris wheel, shooting range, carnival noises(something like this (http://www.audiosparx.com/sa/play/play.cfm/sound_iid.206212)), clowns/clown screams(lol?), fun house

why use a model when you can use shapes?

Vmex manipulation isnt the strongest point of my mapping tbh. If u want an ugly hl1 lookin bus that stands out like a sore thumb i could probably do that. :P Its not essential though as players could simply walk over cars nearby instead to get to the other side unless i make a ridiculously big blockage. Im not focusing on this right now but i might consider making 1 when its nearing completion but its probably unlikely.

coming up with your own idea is the best way to do a map. When you get an idea you LIKE it makes it fun to map. When you get an idea that you dont care for or find painstakingly annoying and boring, mapping sucks and you do a bad job with it. Sometimes people suggest stuff to you and you think you know I kinda always wanted to do something like that before but I was too busy wasting my time on a map I really was getting bored with. And BOOM! you get hyped bout mapping and if ya get the patience for it, you come up with some awesome. Even if you suck, if you wanna do a good map bad enough you find out how and ya learn from your mistakes. I used to suck at making maps, but after messing with diff map editing programs and engines you learn the universal basics of level design and then just perfect your skills with one program until you can map the way you like.
