im working on something new and until I decide on a goodskybox texture, I'm not going to post any screens. I'll have something to show you in a few hours.
Currently don't have a name for it but as I've got several I'm thinking about. I've got more or less a theme than a specific name.

Mostly got done some basic work so theres really nothing too detailed but most of this map is going to take place outside. Theres a network of streets which for the most part deadend at multiple places and then there is one apartment building which will be open and MAYBE a motel/inn depending on the size of the map.
The apartment complex would be just to the left in the second pic and the motel would be at the end of the long road in the first picture.
The motel:

and a dead end on the one street.

I'm going to try seeing how fog works in a minute. I've changed some textures just for varation.

Looks like a good start. A four way intersection with the potential for the zombies to attack from all sides is something I've been considering as well.

zp_intersection? Simple normally works best. :D I find if you give buildings more than two floors it's.. a more urban atmosphere, feel more trapped within a vast developed city.. but thats just me. Obviously you're going to edit this a lot more though and since you still have your own ideas to implement i'll hold back on suggestions for now. Just don't hold back on your creativity and always reference photo's.

It's going to have a motel which will basically be a parking lot you can run around in. I might have 1 room you can enter but that would be it. There will be one building along the streets that you can enter which will I haven't yet decided where it will be. I've just got 1 more street to add onto it and as for the intersection, it's blocked off on 2 sides.
I need to find a way to make my own textures.

You might want to use more variation in buildings
On the last image i see a loong street with a lot of windows etc
cut it up make some indents in the buildings and give them access ladders etc make the buildings more interesting:)

Thats the plan. I'm going to even have one of the streets be at a slight slant. Going to have some bushes, some steps and some ladders. Right now everything is mostly just placeholders. I'm not really sure as to what I'm going to put in for individual buildings at this point except for a motel and 1 other building which I'm not going to talk about till I actually work some more on it.

Definately try and implement fog and anything that will heighten atmosphere i.e. adding flames/bodies to the car wreckages etc. I'd love to see a map that implements sounds aswell, such as the distant wails of the undead, police sirens, screams.
The buildings need to be less blocky and more like real buildings, but I'm sure youre already planning to change that.
Good luck

If u add fog, it could almost be like in the Silent Hill games, where your walking around the Town of Silent Hill and fog surrounds u all around. U could name it zp_silenthill or if its a source map zps_silenthill. Just an idea..

i was considering that actually, right now the default settings for fog look pretty unnatural. take a look:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y210/nialldowning/fogdefault3.jpg
and heres one thats eh
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y210/nialldowning/fogdefault.jpg
when i actually am done most of the work I'll fine tune it since it takes a lot of work to get it to look good and it's a case by case entity.
As for sounds, I do like to consider them. Atmosphere is something that I feel is one of my strongest points. I've put ambient sound in all of my maps thus far, but I think I'm going to make sure to do a lot more in this one because of your suggestion. Thanks!

you're already starting to work on finishing touches when you still have loads and loads of brushwork, texturing, propping and layout to finalise?
not a good way to go..get the layout and brushwork solid and playable before you start thinking about the maps looks.
Just some help

lol, no. I wasn't working on finishing touches. I was only just seeing what the default settings of fog would look like on a map my size. I'm not even near final stages. I'm still doing brush work. I still have env_fog_controller on my map, its just turned off because I don't feel like messing with it until I'm actually done everything else.
When I'm done my brushwork I'll put props in. The two cars are just measurement.

It's a link to VTF Edit, a good program which lets you easily convert most picture formats into vtf and vtm.
- Ps; Remember to let the texture to be in their final directory when opening and saving them, or you'll have to change that in the vtm file (You can use VTF Edit for that too).
