What's your favorite civilizations throughout history? You can also mention reasons as to why they are, if you feel like it.
My personal favorites are:
- The Spartans
They produced excellent warriors, and had a population ten times their own size enslaved through force; they would terrorize their slaves, and young boys would murder slaves to become familiar with killing.
The Spartans were eventually leading a strong alliance compromised of city-states they had defeated in southern Greece. But due to treating their allies badly (the Spartans would always sacrifice allied troops rather than their own in battles), Thebes and other allies turned against Sparta, which turned Sparta from a major power into a minor one.
- The Romans
Through diplomacy and an effective recruiting system, the Romans conquered most of the known world. During the 2nd Punic War with Carthage for instance, the Romans were able to raise tens of thousands of men, despite Hannibal inflicting massive losses upon them in most of the battles. And by treating their allies well, they remained loyal.

For me it would have to be the late British Empire, and Japan 1500-1800.
Britain- I dunno, I'm one of the few remaining true patriots in this country. (Not just some moron that thinks buying a flag and keeping it in the celler makes them a good citizen, but someone that is willing to die for every inch of the **** county.)
Japan - I like Japan, ok?!. There.
I'm going to start using green yellow so my posts are more distinguished looking :D
The Inca Empire
They had advanced technology, including roads, advanced math, and even advanced medicine. A skull found in the Inca Empire had a hole the size of a palm in it, but the person was found to have lived years after the hole had been made. The hole was covered with a plate of gold when found. It is one of the earliest records of brain surgery. Most likely, a tumor was removed. Another thing, they liked human sacrifice, and they had tons of gold. Both good qualities, I think.
The Soviet Union
The opposite of the United States. They had a glorious government system, and the most powerful ground force in the world. What lead to their downfall was a mismanaged government system. Leaders (Like Stalin) were too oppressive and killed too many people while they were in office, causing the Soviet System to collapse in 1991. Many atrocities were committed with dictators like Stalin in office. If the Soviet Union had stronger leaders that had better ideas for bring about glory to Russia, it might be possible that I would be a citizen of the mother land right now instead of a freedom loving capitalist.

I think Japan's history during the civil wars 1500-1600 is really interesting. My interest for it comes from playing the game Shogun: Total War.
Vikings
- They were Norwegian:P
And raw & brutal:)

You should use a brighter color; that one is very hard to read. And yeah, Vikings are badass too.

Romans
Kicked *** for a long time, made much of the world what it is today. Aqueducts, roads, buildings, philosophy, statues. The colloseum. Gladiators.
Vikings.
Made all of Europe scared ****less. Drank to their hearts content, fought in a bloody rage. Plus I am half norwegian :P
Gauls and Early French
Gauls were celts that resisted Rome, takes balls to do that. Later on under the leadership of Charles The Hammer they resisted the muslims. Took balls to do that again. Somewhere after Napoleon they lost thiers however...
America.
America. **** yeah. Nuff said.

- Athenians
Arguably the largest contributors to Western society, above even the Romans, they founded the first, stable Republic, one that was rather liberal; the likes of which, the ancient world had never known. They pioneered math, engineering, science, and philosophy, among other things.
- English/British
Having amassed an impressive empire in their day, contributed greatly to Western culture, primarily in the arts (especially literature), science, and technology, they are very influential. In fact, the ground on which I sit today, is presently mine, due to the English having come here.
- Norse
Also known as the Vikings, they dominated Scandinavia, Iceland, Greenland, and Denmark from 500 AD, or so, to 1200 AD. They were feared warriors, respected merchants, and renowned sailors and navigators. Besides, me being Swedish in decent is only a plus.
- Persians
Technologically advanced and vast, they were an empire to be respected, until Alexander of Macedon conquered them, of course.
- Spartans
As aforementioned, their warriors were simply kick-***. Between their wit, tactical prowess, and physical strength, they sat above even most Athenian units. Although their means to creating such a society were brutal, or often oppressive, it was impressive, nonetheless.
- The United States
America, **** yeah! Comin' again to save the mother ****in' day, yeah!

So Denmark isn?t a part of Scandinavia??? Ah man... But yeah, the vikings really kicked *** for the better of 200 years, they were also the first europeans to visit America. They erected some stones over there, and it is official (Though not really a popular fact) That the american settlers found BLUEEYED(!!!) Indians in Northamerica. Eat that Columbus :P

I had completely forgotten adding the Mongolians, they are one of my favorites aswell. Good that you reminded me.
The Mongolians
Though they often were not united, they were the by far most powerful army of its time when united under one leader. Their fast-moving horse archer units could kill off tons upon tons of enemies suffering minimal losses - often their foes did not even reach them.
They would often pretend to turn tails and run. When they had reached Europe and battled European knights, they would pretend to retreat, causing the knights to follow them, and when the knights had been separated from their main force, the mobile Mongolian cavalry would encircle them and tear them apart.
They also used psychological warfare to a large extent; they would destroy everything in their path of cities who had opposed them - even women, childs and pets. When the Mongolians conquered Delhi in India, they slaughtered its entire population, and put skulls in piles.

He has said it several times, so you have probably heard about it, but simply forgotten of it.
And you are pretty racially mixed, LL. Perhaps I'm aswell (altough I doubt I'm that much), but as far as I know I'm only Swedish and Finnish.

Yes, Denmark is a part of Scandinavia. And I have read and heard Vikings have been to America, but I never knew they had settled there. Cool to know.

The Mongolians were to be respected, but they did not contribute much to society, or were incredible warriors like the Spartans. The one thing they did do, however, was pioneer blitzkrieg. As a matter of fact, I may have to add them for that. That was a major milestone in military strategy and tactics.

I consider Scandinavia the peninsula itself, though Denmark is a part of it, yes. I also forgot to mention Normandy, which was conquered by the Norse.

And Russia was actually founded by Swedish Vikings travelling east to trade. The major cities Kiev and Novgorod were created by Vikings.

Hitler was smart, but his judgement was severly clouded due to drug abuse. You should watch the documentary High Hitler if you can come across it; it is very interesting.

It is hard comparing two peoples using different fighting styles; the Spartans fought mainly with the spear, on foot, while the Mongolians were primarily horse archers, and very skilled ones.

Just think about the chinese emperor when they had one... He had to sleep with 2 concubines each day, and he had about 11.000... It would take nearly three years to "Get through" them all :D
Talking about a busy man >_>

The fall of the mongol empire is actually one of the reasons why the age of exploration began, and the new world was found. When the mongol trade lanes were closed due to the various islamic states closing their borders and waging war and stuffs, europe was forced to search for new trade routes.
Something else, though a little bit on the negative side that the mongols brought, was the black death. After they conquered china, they brought it to europe via turkey and the slavic states. Then the world started dropping dead :D
Including 2/3 parts of Norway :/
If it wasn't for that, we could've been about 12 millions here today:blink:
Though, it'd be a little too crowded here:)
