Honestly, if you want to pursue a profession in games, I would say go with learning 3d Max 7 like the back of your hand. Once you have, post your resume on raph.com and I promise you will have atleast 20 job offers the first day.
Mapping takes serious devotion. I personally suck at it because I am to picky, and often go crazy detailed into a single room and burn my "oomph" out. Resulting in a un-finished map.
However, if you do pick up level design, it is very closely intwined with popular architecture styles. You have to pick a theme, mood, setting, and count for gameplay. Every last detail is important. (That is actually a lie, that is my own personal pact. Most people don't notice the map at all since they are busy wetting their pants running from zombies.)
PS: Dont map for Zp. Map for ZP:S.

Mapping is hard, very hard to do. It takes time and with mapping, time is your enemy. Plus if you ever go into mapping as a pro, you must look at some of the next gen games out there, think how long and how hard that was to make! ;) As time goes on, mapping, as well other jobs in making a game, will get harder and harder to make. To me, I can only see gaming going so far till it's too hard and too long to make, but thats just me.
I'm not trying to scare you, just getting you ready is all.

I have made plenty of maps that should never see the light of day... It's just a process of learning. But, mapping takes alot of time and original ideas to get pros for it =/
Okey this will make the things go litle longer then I expected cause my work started and I have 10hour days ... crap .... but I am taking some effects of games HL2 episode 2 and sin episode 1 emergency for creating the map and I have got litle more ideas of them but we shall see what will hapen ... unfortunately if I have the time I need I could get at least one good map made at this month to the end ... I am SO SORRY about this but my boss said the rules ... -_-*
Ou yeah one one thing as PS my hammer went crazy about 1 week ago now I am not sure why but the textures are running off from models in hammer 3d screen and are blocking the way to see anything trough and it makes it hard to create maps -_-
Okay could someone help my my Hammer vorks as in Dod:s and HL2 but NOT in CS:S it will start lagging and throwing the textures all over places in 3d screen -_- I tryed to reinstall but it was no use so PLEACE help me or I wont be able to make any maps ;-; Seriously I cant make any maps and soon I gonna throw this ~~~~ out of window cause then I have no use to this
