Is there a better program for compiling .mdls from .qcs? Yes, I have read the stickies and i have milkshape, but my compiles usually turn out quite distorted. I would rather not fork out for 3ds max :( so please give some suggestions!

Fork out for 3dmax or Maya... :) Milkshape can be used well by some people but I hate the program... so limited on stuff that's why it's a 25 dollar program.

The milkshape compiler is a slightly older version of valve's official compiler. (it doesnt support transparency on the models ) Most likely if something on your model looks distorted it's your fault and not the compilers.

Looks fine in the viewer. Until it's compiled.

Im not sure how dead this topic is, but MS3d works great for HL1. If by distorted you mean the body goes in random directions and stretches it all over the place, then you moved a bone in the reference .smd.
