-Ok so I decided to do something scary, and i found this Zombie Panic mod.. I suppose it scary.. My perfect setting... A sewers
-Here is the sewer's im working on atm ill be adding more to it later.
-Note.. 1280X1024 Screenshots and had to make them less quality :*(

-Added some red lights now so you can see the dead bodies and the props a little better.
-Rounded off the corners and the tops with metal texture as you can see in screenshot.

Moved the lights out a bit from the cagedlight model so it didnt look like the wall was very bright.

ADDED THIS SOUND ambient/levels/citadel/citadel_ambient_scream_loop1.wav In the back of the sewer where that cage is itll play this sound.. Look for it in hammer its preety ~~~~ scary sounding.. Also to add to this effect i put around 5 dead ragdolls floating back in the back cage.. hehe scary?

Welcome to ZP. Great to see a new face working on source maps. Have fun and watch out for the community, some do bite.

Hey thanks!, BTW this work I showed you only toke around 10 minutes.. Ima gonna keep adding some scary stuff. Gonna work on architecture a little bit more.

Can't reall comment on it a whole lot, but the lighting in the water is cool. You should make it a bit brighter (and put ladders where the lights shine, otherwise they have no real real reason to be there -- besides eyecandy)

Hmm, right now it looks more like a Submarine area then a sewer, I'd add a few more pipes, too.


Other then that, you've got an okay looking start :D.

I put the lights there for a little bit of eyecandy effect along with the spookyness level.

Its preety bright also and ill be adding more pipes. Im just gonna work on a level that gives the spooky eerie effect in an indoor factory type thing.

That water in the middle... looks like a good place for zombie ambushes :ph34r: . I like your map so far, keep it up. If you're new to ZP, I suggest playing it to get the feel of this MOD. You can also get some inspiration from it :) .

Cant really play it if i dont have original HL anymore.. but it seems like there is two teams and zombies try and ambush the hell out of the survivors

Yeah, it's more or less like that :D . But for most of the time survivors grab weapons, find a good spot and camp, while zombies rush them wave by wave. It's not a problem, because they run out of ammo sooner or later. On the other hand, it can be pretty annoying on some custom maps where there's too much guns and ammo and vents are way too long. Without playing ZP it might be hard for you to make a map that will fit ZP's gameplay, but if you feel its mood it shoudn't be a problem for you :) . And we're waiting for more screens :P .

Cool thanks for telling me this stuff. When I can get to play ZP mod I can see how much ammo and things are on the maps then ill optimize my map to that. Also im working on the second room :)

you probably should play zp a good bit to familiarize yourself with the way the game runs and the types of styles that are implemented into maps. Some maps make things equal for both sides, some totally imbalanced and some are just for show. Take a look to see just an idea of what sort of thing people are expecting so that you can create the unexpected. I suggest sticking to the official maps that were released with 1.0. Some of the custom maps can be rather imbalanced and sometimes buggy.

Best way to figure out which maps favor which side is to get out there and play.

if ya have the mod, just open it up and create a new game. Wait for it to load and before continuing go to console and type

sv_testmode 1

Now you can test out stuff as zombo and survivor.

Man, I just downloaded your map and these 2 rooms are scary as hell (good use of ambience). I can't wait to see the final version :) . And i have a few suggestions for you if you don't mind.

1. Red cagelights in the water would propably look better if they were placed a liltlle bit higher.
2. Posters and graffiti on the walls should be moved around a bit. Nobody would place a poster on a lamp in real world (my english skills might not be good enough to convey my thought to you, so here's a screenshot showing what I mean :D ) http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/306/scary00002uf.jpg (http://imageshack.us) .
3. Work on textures and texture transitions. They're not bad, but they can always be better :) .
4. Find a theme for your map and stick to it, so it won't be a building filled with random rooms. Also, you could start thinking about an appropriate name for it.

No problem, I'm always glad to help. And yup, I heard that sound and it really creeps me out :P . Sounds are very important if you want to make a map with scary atmosphere.

how do u not have hl if you have sdk??? Just download it, it's free with hl2. Too bad you can't play it. Your screens were pretty dark, it's hard to see whats going in them.

Screenshots usually are darker than it is in game. Download the map Eon attached to his first post if you want to see what he did so far... and BTW: I hate your signature :P . I hope Valve will fix that god~~~~ error soon.

I dont have "hl1" so i cant play ZP and its not free with hl2 i only got the hl2 package

ah well, that kinda sucks man. They sell them bundled together in stores now even. Ah well at least you can make maps. If anything needs help you can always count on the community to help out with ideas. Tats is especially helpful when he's not busy. I like it so far though. Makes me wish valve would fix their error to make it easier for all of us.

Lucky you. I just got response from steamsupport. They told me to run SDK in safe mode, then validate files and restart computer immediately. It didn't work :( . They also gave me some adresses for maililng lists where I could possibly find a solution to my problem... I didn't find it of course <_< . This whole situation sucks, but it's good that at least some people can work on their maps.

just open up the sdk and then open the gameinfo.txt file for the game u want to make levels for and before opening the level editor change the line in gameinfo.txt that reads ToolsAppId 211

to

AppId 211

now open the editor.

should give you a problem with loading models but you can still create and manipulate brushes, just if you want to create a prop you'll have to enter in the text for the model instead of selecting the picture of it.

I guess it's only temporary solution - I can't place props now (as you mentioned before), and even if I could, my 3d textured view is all black, and working in wireframe mode isn't very pleasant to me. I guess I'll just wait for an official fix (hope to get it before 2006...). Thanks for your help anyway, I appreciate it.

It looks like it could be a great map as i'm sure 90% of the mappers for ZP have ran the sewer idea around their mind atleast once. I haven't taken up the project just because I can't see myself hiding in the sewers but i'm sure if you put enough effort into it you could figure something out.

Now for the map it looks more like a public bath than a sewers to me. The pipes feel out of place. The tunnel is too box like. I suggest building this section over and over again till it feels right. I'd suggest adding curves, removing red lights or atleast taking them out of the water as that doesn't make much sense. I can't imagine why any one would place perfectly good boxes/posters down in the sewers?

Lighting: Clean it up and fewer lights next to each other (space em out a bit). Red is a great color but doesn't fit everywhere. Remove lights for soiled water as it doesn't make any sense.

Debris: Find small debri like milk cartons/stone things that you would see in the sewers. I doubt a large crate fell down a drain or was flushed down a toilet.

Architecture: Try to find a place that fits the pipes better and try not to go over board even if it is a sewers there aren't as many pipes and you usually find them within reach of a professional so usually on the sides and not roof.

Decals: Graffitti is good but Posters don't make sense. Who goes down into the sewers to advertise something and place up their poster? Try making custom decals there are plenty of tutorials.

Last point. I love scary but I love fun if the game is only scary because of sound/dark/no where to run then it won't last long. You need to focus on gamplay first and then design. I'm not saying your map is lacking I am just stating how I feel.

So far like I said it looks good I just think following my suggestions will make it better.

yeah, I know how that is. It looks good but not good enough for show. You get all excited bout one major step but then you have to add a bunch of props to really bring it to life. Take your time and let us know when theres been some progress you're proud of.
