Objective mode has unlimited zombies spawning, survival has normally 25 zombie lives at the start. If you don't do the objectives you can't win and many servers will kick you if you try and barricade. If you're playing survival feel free to barricade up.

On objective maps the objective will often have a red box surrounding it. You need to press the use button though in order to pick this up usually, not just walk over it.

Your flashlight has limited battery and can randomly cut out, so avoid using it unless you have to. It is also worth bearing in mind that on many maps the light can be seen through walls and so will highlight your position.

Barricade hammers are used to put up boards that will take zombies a few swipes to get through. Press reload to rotate the board and right click to change the length. You can pick them up again by 'using' them if they have not been damaged. Also bear in mind any pressure on a board from above will smash it instantly (this prevents players using them to ladder up buildings).

Holster your weapon with the h key and you can right click to shove furniture. This is much more effective than using a melee weapon to knock barricades into place and avoids breaking furniture which can be smashed.

Re-map your panic key to something more accessible. The default is the p key and you will find it often quite inaccessible at the time you want to panic. I use the \ key as it is right next to my movement controls. When you panic you will drop everything except the weapon you are currently holding, so if possible reload before you panic, or switch to melee.

Magnum is a difficult weapon to use and you will need some experience with the models before you know where head height is and how to take your time aiming. Playing on servers which display the damage you deal with each shot can be very useful as they allow you to know when you were aiming true, as headshots do more damage.

Melee weapons are generally ineffective however can be used to great effect if you are paired up with someone. Let your friend distract the zombie/s with gun shots while you flank them and beat them with a sledgehammer.

Try and manage your weight effectively. Carrying more than one primary weapon (eg a remmy and an ak47) gives you firepower however will also make you very slow. Carrying say a shotgun and a pistol allows you to move much more quickly and avoid being eaten. when the stamina bar is empty even a normal zombie can outpace you quickly.

Check your back frequently to avoid zombies sneaking up on you. Aside from the occasional moan a zombie makes virtually no noise when moving and a standard zombie can kill an unarmoured survivor in 4 hits (3 if a carrier).

When using the c4 you can only throw it a short way and bear in mind that zombies can flip it wherever they please until you blow it up. Press 6 to access the mobile and secondary fire to detonate the c4.

And finally, play nice. Share ammo with others and don't barricade people out. If you use a mike let people know which objectives you will try and deal with.

That's good solid advice.

If only everyone read it and lived by it.
